Who We Are

St. Mark’s was founded in 1913. It is an Episcopal Church with an emphasis on social justice and a contemporary style of worship where all are welcome – no exceptions. We strive to be a diverse-faith community serving City Heights. We believe the kingdom of God is made visible in our proclamation of the Gospel and in loving acts of serving others.
We are an accessible congregation that believes all are gifted by God and in baptism, called to share the grace and mercy of God, which we have been so freely given. We are young and old, able and disabled, gay and straight, from diverse races and backgrounds, all gathered in worship, service, and learning.

Our Mission & Vision

History

St. Mark’s began in 1913 in a middle class blue-collar neighborhood, in what was then called East San Diego, now  City Heights. Over the years, apartment buildings replaced single-family dwellings, and the neighborhood became more densely populated. Today City Heights is home to people from all over the world.

After the old St. Mark’s building was torn down in the early 1990’s, we moved to our current location, just two blocks north of the previous site. Here, we’ve created a space which serves the articulated needs of City Heights.

An Accessible Congregation is a congregation that made a commitment to be an accessible congregation with The National Organization on Disability. St. Mark’s has Cathedral Chairs instead of pews that allow wheel chairs and scooters to be easily accommodated throughout the congregation. The floors are flat and the facilities are equipped with ADA compliant restrooms. We are fortunate to have members who are part of the disabled community that enrich our common life and worship.
